“Wheat, Wood, Wool is a collection of drawings dating from 2023 to 2025, a period when I trained in sourdough baking after meeting female farmers and bakers in France. It was also when I gradually put aside the idea of making a living from drawing. I wanted to work with something concrete, simple materials, to produce something that everyone could appreciate. I wanted to cut out the noise of Instagram and take a step back. But it’s difficult to completely redefine your aspirations, and images always pop up. When Hikari asked me to do a book for ttbooks, I was excited but also scared. In the end, I did what I know how to do: mix emotions, desires, ideas, colours. Using drawings from my sketchbooks over the last few years, I painted a story that connects everything and makes sense, like when I try to find coherence in my life.
At the same time, I wondered about setting up a small bakery, working for myself. And I remembered what drawing can do: make all fantasies visible. So here are my dreams of an anti-tech bakery, fair, beautiful, good, mysterious.” Chloé Bertron
